Diamond Street Diner Reopens as Grazin' Diner

Hudson's famous Diamond Street Diner closed back 2009 will now reopen as Grazin' Diner with new owner and local farmer, Dan Gibson. The diner will have a 'farm to table' menu, where local farmers will deliver their goods directly to the restaurant, thus cutting out the middle man.

The theme of the restaurant is similar to a 1950s burger joint, but the beef will be from Dan's farm "Grazin' Angus Acres in Ghent. When asked why the walls are painted white and not a darker color to hide the dirt, Dan explain, "We are not trying to hide the dirt on the white walls, they will be clean as the beef we are giving you."

The beef, pork and eggs will come from Dan's farm and if they run out of something, then they won't have it that day. The potatoes will be from Miller's Crossing Farm in Hudson, the restaurant will also have homemade ice cream, local and organic soda-pop and homemade butter. The 'farm to table' style offers patrons fresh, local and healthy food.

The restaurant is schedule to open October 1, 2011.

History of the Hudson Opera House

The Hudson Opera House has a rich history dating back to 1855. Reopened in 1992, The Opera House presents performances, exhibitions, workshops, readings and lectures. The 18th Annual Gala to benefit the ongoing restoration, "In Black and White", will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2011 at the Basilica Hudson. For information contact the Opera House directly.

"The building was built in 1855 as the first City Hall for Hudson. In early years, the first floor of the building was home to the Franklin Library, and the First National Bank of Hudson. Frederic Church and Sanford Gifford showed their paintings here, Bret Harte read his poems, and Henry Ward Beecher gave a rousing abolitionist lecture. Susan B. Anthony visited at least twice, the first time lecturing about abolishing slavery, and the second time to rally support for women's suffrage. Around 1880, at the height of the Gilded Age, and shortly after Paris built it's new Opera House, the Palais Garnier, many town halls and city halls in America adopted the 'Opera House' name which is how this building came to be known as the Hudson Opera House. The first floor of this building held various civic offices (Post Office, Police Station, Common Council, etc.) and the performance hall upstairs, New York State's oldest surviving theatre was used for everything from traveling lecture presentations and musical and theatrical events to local functions like dances, cotillions, poultry shows and graduations. The Hudson Opera House is one of the oldest surviving theatres in America.

After City Hall moved up the street in 1962, the building was briefly a Moose Lodge, then was sold to an out-of-town developer. For nearly thirty years it sat vacant, decaying and accumulating debris. When the Opera House was threatened with further decay and possible eventual demolition, local citizens banded together to save the building. In 1992, Hudson Opera House, Inc., was formed as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to restoring the building both physically and to its position as a cultural and civic center.

Much work was required before any occupancy was possible. The basement had standing water from clogged sewers. The roof was leaking, causing further damage to ceilings and walls. The building had asbestos that had to be abated, and many four-legged and winged creatures had to be evicted. In addition, as a historic building that falls within the City of Hudson Historic District, restoration procedures require preservation studies, historically sensitive building plans, and approval from the State Historic Preservation Office for any restoration work undertaken. With funds raised through benefits and direct mail appeals, studies were completed, the roof was temporarily repaired and the space was slowly prepared for restoration. In 1996 HOH kicked off the Open the Door campaign and raised the money to open the first restored room in the building, the West Room, in December 1997. Since that time, four additional spaces on the first floor have opened and HOH has presented extensive, multi-cultural programming. Hudson Opera House, Inc. is now in the planning phase for completion of the entire restoration project." -- The Hudson Opera House

Flag Day in Hudson - June 11, 20011

Each year the Hudson Elks organize the annual Flag Day Parade and this year it's on Saturday, June 11, 2011. The parade is estimated to draw as many as 10,000 people to the Hudson streets!

Step off time is 2pm from State and Green streets. The parade will travel through Warren Street to the Hudson waterfront. The midway will be open all day with carnival rides, games, food vendors and live music. The Iron Eagles will perform an air show from 7:30-9pm, followed by fireworks at dusk. Based on the weather conditions, "Spontaneous Snowshoe Hikes" will be held on trails at Mud Creek.

The event will start indoors with a brief lesson on the basics of snowshoeing. Additionally, you will learn a few animal tracking tips and most likely will see signs of wildlife on the trail.

Did you know that the original inhabitants of the City of Hudson, NY were the Mohican Indians? In the 17th century a Dutchman by the name of Franz VanHoesen purchased a large tract of land, which included the area of Hudson, plus parts of Greenport. As the city developed, settlers arrived, some with houses which had been prefabricated in Nantucket. Way ahead of their time!

A sizable number of these families were Quakers. They established rules and regulations and laid out the city on a grid pattern. In 1785 the City of Hudson became the first chartered city after the Declaration of Independence and the third city in the State of New York. The local economy included whaling, sealing and oil. As the city transitioned from a seaport town to an industrial city, the new economy took shape and knitting and cotton mills opened and flourished. The Allen Paper Car Wheel Works and many other small manufacturers brought business into the city.

Even though the economy of Hudson began to declined towards the end of the 1800s, the city managed to retain and preserved it's rich architectural heritage. Many of the buildings in Hudson are in the National Register of Historic Places.

As Hudson moves in the new millenium, it still maintains its original landscape and, at the same time, is experiencing a revitalization and has also distinguished itself as a regional center for contemporary art.

Apple Picking Season Begins

Apple picking begins on Friday, September 17th at the Fix Bros. Fruit Farm located at 215 White Birch Road in Hudson, NY. The early varieties include Honey Crisp, MacIntosh, Acey Macs, Jonagold, Cortland and Empire. Hudson-Athens Lighthouse

In early 1873 construction to build a lighthouse began on the Hudson River between the city of Hudson and Athens, New York. A blog dedicated to lighthouses "A Lovely Shore Breeze..." posted some interesting facts worth reading.

Open to the public, the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society runs boat trips and tours to the lighthouse during the summer through the fall on August 14th and September 11th and October 9th.

The Hudson Opera House Summer Program

The Hudson Opera House offers a year-round schedule of arts and cultural programming in the 1855 former Hudson City Hall which contains New York State's oldest surviving theatre.

Since opening the first restored room in December of 1997, five rooms on the first floor have been rehabilitated, and we have presented thousands of cultural and educational programs, more than 850 in the last year alone. The Hudson Opera House provides free or low-cost cultural offerings every week of the year.

Ongoing programs include concerts, readings, lectures, exhibitions, theatre and dance presentations, after-school programs, workshops, classes, and community arts events like the annual Winter Walk on Warren Street.

Rip Van Winkle Bridge Celebrates it's 75th Birthday

On July 2, 1935 the Rip Van Winkle Bridge opened to traffic and connected Catskill, NY and Hudson, NY. The 13-span cantilever bridge over the Hudson River is 5,040 feet long and 145 feet above the river. At the time passenger cars were charged $.80 plus $.10 per passenger, maximum of $1.00. Pedestrians and bicycles also had to pay.

According to the New York State Department of Transportation, about 15,000 vehicles cross the Rip Van Winkle Bridge each day.
The cost of the original bridge was $2,400,000.

Hudson's Flag Day Parade - June 12th, 2010

On June 12th, 2010 at 10 am the Hudson Elks Lodge #787 Flag Day festivities along Seventh Street to Henry Hudson Riverfront Park will begin!

Hudson's 12th annual parade will include food vendors lining the streets and Senator Charles Schumer as this year's Grand Marshal leading the parade at 2 pm. The Caballeros, the Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps, the Ghent Band, the Main Street Band and Night Trains will also be marching .

A special performance by the Iron Eagle Aerobatics Air Show at 7pm on the waterfront, followed by fireworks at 9pm.

Kaaterskill Falls in Palenville

Kaaterskill Falls located across the river in Palenville is the highest two-tiered waterfall in New York State. The upper tier measures at 175 feet and the lower tier at 85 feet tall.

The water levels this time of year are high and you can see this spectacular view, however, in the late summer the water flow can reduce to a trickle.

Take NY Route 23A West through Palenville for about 3 miles through a sharp hair-pin turn. The parking lot is on the left. Be careful walking along the shoulder of the road as you head to the trail and be sure to wear good hiking shoes.

Message from Hudson Area Library

On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd, voters in the City of Hudson will have the opportunity to strengthen the Hudson Area Library by voting yes on the ballot proposition that would enhance the library’s community-based funding.

The Library has been making ends meet with great difficulty. It costs the Library $200,000 a year to operate at the level you’ve come to expect. However, we only receive $48,000 from the City of Hudson. This funding is greatly appreciated, but is not guaranteed.

So you may ask, how does the Library function when our operating costs far outstrip this funding? Simply put, we’ve been spending down our endowment fund to balance the budget for the past several years and there’s just not enough left in the endowment to balance the budget moving forward.

That’s why we’re asking you, the Hudson taxpayers to support the Library’s ballot proposition on Election Day. Your share of the proposition is based on your property’s assessment.

For the City of Hudson, the average assessment is $108,000. Hudson homeowners would be asked, on average, to pay an additional $2 a month ($24 per year) to help support the Library. This will bring the total community-based funding the Library will receive from City homeowners to $120,000.

This community-based funding coupled with additional modest state, county and other local funding the Library receives, the support we receive from the Friends of the Hudson Area Association Library as well as committed community members who make the Library a philanthropic priority, will enable the Hudson Area Library to provide the programs and services the community has come to expect.

If you approve the propositions, the Hudson Area Library will be able to:

Extend library hours
Enhance staffing for our children’s programs and activities
Enhance staffing to help all of our patrons
Add to our collections—especially new adult fiction books
Increase public computer access and create a space just for adult users
Extend the History Room hours
Clean up and brighten the library by hiring a professional cleaning service
Get out into the community more to let everyone know about our great programs and services

If the propositions do not pass, the Library will be forced to make substantial cuts to its programs and services including:

No new materials purchases—no new books, CDs, DVDs, computer programs, periodical subscriptions
Cut programs for children and seniors
Cut hours—Library will only be open 35 hours per week
Institute a fee for all inter-Library loans
Severely curtail access and possibly close the History Room
Reduce staff even further which will adversely impact how much we can help with research, computer access and job search assistance

Since July 4th, 2009, Hudson Business District on Warren Street has been graced with beautifully painted and decorated fiberglass dogs. This past weekend the dogs were auctioned off for the Perform Columbia and The Columbia County Council for the Arts charity.

Carmela Cannavo had been eying "Queenie" by artist Kelly Young all summer long and finally had the opportunity to bid on the dog this weekend. "(My favorite part of the event) was getting Queenie," Cannavo told the Register-Star. "The artist did an amazing job, very classy and appropriate. Queenie has a royal presence."

Walkway Over the Hudson

The Poughkeepsie Highland Railroad Bridge reopened this past Saturday, October 3, 2009 for the general public to walk, bike or run across! The 111-year-old former railroad bridge is the world's longest pedestrian span. In celebration of Henry Hudson's voyage up the river the bridge was opened to the public after it was refurbished with public and private money. Legendary Pete Seeger commemorated the opening with a few of his old favorite songs on his banjo.

Two Square Miles Documentary

'Two Square Miles" takes a closer look at Hudson, a town of 7,500 people and how the residents deal with change and each other.

The film follows the residents of Hudson over the course of two years and highlights the division in the local support for a proposed 300 million dollar cement plant owned by a Swiss multinational corporation, a 40 acre industrial city with skyscraper-sized buildings towering over a 1,200 acre open pit mine. Raising the question how does a community provide good jobs while preserving the environment and their landscapes.

Diamond Street Diner Closes :(

The Diamond Street Diner on Warren Street has been seized by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finances for unpaid sales taxes.

This is a sad day for Hudson residents and visitors. The diner has always been a cozy place to grab brunch or a burger. Reasonable priced, low-key atmosphere made The Diamond Street Diner one of my favorite and regular places to eat. We will all miss "The Diamond" of Warren St.

Today, Saturday September 12th, from 11 am to 2 pm the 200 block of Warren Street will have 16 restaurants and caterers offering sampling of their dishes.

Chef Danyell Ray of Georgia Ray's Catering will be serving "applewood smoked pulled pork" and a vegetarian Focaccia bread. Other vendors include Olde Hudson, Ca'Mea, Vasilow's, Verdigris Tea, Vico, Hazel's Kitchen, Mexican Radio, Savoia, Nolita's Tanzy's West Indian Natural Foods and Strongtree Organic Coffee.

The event is free to attend and food prices begin at $1./00..

Migliorelli Farm is a family-run fruit and vegetable farm located in Northern Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley Region of New York. Originating in the Bronx in 1933 when Angelo Migliorelli first brought the broccoli raab seeds when he immigrated to New York from the Lazio region of Italy. Migliorelli and his son, Rocco peddled their vegetables by horse and cart up and down the Bronx, sun up to sun down. Eventually Co-Op City was to be built therefore pushing the last of the farmers out of the Bronx. Farming was Rocco’s passion so he brought his family to the Hudson Valley. Night Out on Warren Street

Our first stop was the Carrie Haddad Gallery where we had the pleasure of meeting one of the photographers in the "After Glow" exhibit, Warren Neidich. Accomplished artist, writer and organizer who alternates his time between Berlin and New York currently exhibits in galleries and museums worldwide. The group show at Carrie Haddad will run through August 30, 2009.

We continue our Warren Street stroll to Mexican Radio, a popular restaurant in NYC and now in Hudson, NY, however, our experience was disappointing. We ordered our drinks and waited and waited, and waited. After a long time, a waiter passing by said "Sorry, we had some trouble in the kitchen". Oh, I knew this wasn't going to be good, we hadn't even ordered our dinner! So before we hit "the point of no return" with my six year old, we decided to leave. Next stop Baba Louie's.

On the other hand, our Baba Louie's experience was wonderful in every way...the food, the quick and friendly service was perfect! The pizza reminded me of my Italian Mom's delicious recipe and the Caesar Salad was the tastiest I've ever had!

Our night out on Warren Street ended with a beautiful sunset and cool summer evening breeze.

I found the store to be nicely organized and easy to find things. I purchased a roll of screen material for mending and while I was there we bought a flag for July 4th celebration and some sunflower seeds. Service was friendly and informative. River Views of the Hudson River School
